11th October 2022, marks the 10th anniversary of International Girl Child Day. The day aims at increasing attention on the issues such as #education, #security, #development, and #access to #basic #facilities for the girls.
Is a day dedicated to celebrating the voices and power of girls, and championing their rights worldwide?
However, the #reality still exists that girls are #deprived of the opportunity to learn simply because they are #girls. This is due to a variety of reasons, including but not limited to the value system that women do not need education and the physical constraints of not having schools accessible to them.
Girls and young women continue to face risks of #violence and #discrimination in nearly every sphere — homes, schools, communities, and even online.
In the #poorest societies girls face a greater risk of #malnutrition and hunger as well as little or no access to education and career opportunities.
Research has shown that simply being born a girl can leave a child at a huge disadvantage in life.
Millions of girls around the world are denied opportunities, careers, and skills, mistreated, and face many adversities in life, and thousands of Ghanaian girls are no exception. In the Northern part of the country, for instance, most families would rather marry off their daughters, some make them work and bring home income instead of being taken to school or continuing with their secondary school education (SHS). Due to poor education and training, these girls grow up to have limited opportunities for social and economic progression.
Moreover, communities are worse off as significant portions of their populations are uneducated and lack adequate skills to increase productivity and make significant progress.
To accelerate progress, we uphold our commitment to fully involve children most especially girls in decision-making processes, championing their solutions, and wish this world become a safer and happier place for a girl child to live happily in.
We call on the government, stakeholders, parents, and other relevant bodies to continue working together to ensure that we are creating a province where girls have the choice and opportunity to be whatever it is that they want to be.
